Founded in 1979 by Joyce Rogers and Linda Chin, Counterpoint is Stanford University's second-oldest and only all-female a cappella group, and it is also the first all-female a cappella group on the West Coast.
Counterpoint has recorded twelve albums and has been featured thrice in Best Of College A Cappella albums. Counterpoint has also received seven nominations for Contemporary A Cappella Recording Society awards (“the international a cappella equivalent of a Grammy,”) including two for Best Album, two for Best Song, and two for Best Arrangement.
Their album and EP No Turning Back and A Woman Like That are available on Spotify and Apple Music. In 2016, Counterpoint released a music video for their single "Ex’s and Oh’s," available on YouTube. A music video for "Don’t Wake Me Up" is forthcoming.
Counterpoint is regularly invited to perform at all-campus events and holds quarterly performances. Off-campus, Counterpoint performs gigs in the Bay Area. Counterpoint tours Southern California yearly with the Mendicants and has toured in Hawaii with them as well. In 2018, Counterpoint embarked on an East Coast tour, where they sang at Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.
Counterpoint's repertoire is diverse, and has included everything from Florence and the Machine and Sara Bareilles to Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. We are recognized both on and off campus for our original arrangements (always arranged by members, both past and present), our love of music, and, of course, our great sense of humor.
